US Home Improvement Incentive
Net Metering & Net Billing
State and utility programs that credit your electric bill for the solar energy you export to the grid — the exact value varies from full retail rates to lower net-billing rates depending on your state and utility.
Overview
What is the Net Metering?
The Net Metering & Net Billing is administered by State public utility commissions and available to eligible properties in United States (state & utility programs). It is designed to help homeowners reduce the upfront cost of energy-efficient and clean-energy improvements — supporting US climate goals while lowering household energy bills.
This scheme supports installations including Solar.
Eligibility
Am I eligible?
- You must have a grid-connected solar PV system (battery storage may also qualify under some net-billing rules).
- Your utility and state must offer a net-metering or net-billing tariff for your customer class.
- System size is typically capped relative to your annual electricity consumption.
- You must sign an interconnection agreement with your utility before exporting power.
- Credit value depends on your state policy — full retail credit, avoided-cost, or a separate net-billing rate.

Process
How it works
- 1
Confirm your utility offers net metering or net billing and check the current export rate.
- 2
Your installer files an interconnection application and arranges a bidirectional meter.
- 3
Once approved and switched on, exported energy is tracked and credited on your monthly bill.
- 4
Credits offset the electricity you draw from the grid, lowering your net bill.
